Description: |
Making the most of her African heritage while simultaneously providing income for unskilled women is To Bead Africa, a company established by Thobeka Mdiza in 2000. The company started out of necessity Mdiza states. When her widowed sister-in-law was left destitute and unable to find a job because she was illiterate and lived in a rural area of the Eastern Cape, they had to come up with a plan. Since her sister-in-law was skilled in the art of beading, Mdiza lined up commissions and projects for her sister-in-law and her friends. That was in 2000 and from those humble beginnings To Bead Africa has grown into a company that manufactures beaded handbags, clothing and promotional items. Some of their wares have already made it onto the shelves of a major retail chain store and been snapped up by eager buyers. While Mdiza currently draws on the skills of 30 women whenever there’s an order, her objective is to ultimately have a full time factory beading products, screen printing promotional items and providing skills training. |
